The strength of PKI technology largely depends on the adequate protection of cryptographic keys. The smartcard, whether a card, a USB token or even virtual, physically protects secrets and provides a standard set of functions for the cryptographic applications. In practice it can be used for computer login, web page authentication or as electronic signatures for documents and programme codes.
At the workshop we will review the functions and lifecycle of smartcards and how to contact them. We can make our own certificate, trusting the key to the smart card and using it for authentication and signature.
